The creators of TikTok are endless sources of information when it comes to all things beauty and we couldn’t be more thankful. From boho braids to robe curls, there is always a hair trend making waves on the app. One of the newest trends to be buzzing in the natural hair community is clove water rinses and sprays. People swear by it for everything from covering grays to hair growth and less shedding. So obviously we decided to investigate. Discover why using clove water for hair growth may be exactly what you need!
What Even Is Clove Water?
Clove is a spice that is undeniably good for us when ingested. It contains manganese (which supports healthy collagen production), a high amount of eugenol (which stops oxidative damage), and it is also antimicrobial. The question is, do these benefits translate when applied to our hair?
Clove Water Hair Benefits
According to the dozens of people using the rinse on TikTok, there are a ton of clove water hair benefits. But one Google search will show you there isn’t much scientific research about the benefits of cloves for hair care. That basically means most of the information about its benefits is anecdotal. However, cloves are used for hair health quite often in Ayurvedic medicine. Compared to the less pleasant rice water hack, we see clove water as pretty harmless. It smells amazing and you don’t need to rinse it out. We definitely think it’s worth trying out (after you do a patch test, of course).
How to Make Clove Water
Making the rinse is simple. Follow the below recipe:
- Take two tablespoons of cloves and muddle them.
- Take two cups of boiling water and pour it onto the cloves letting the mixture cool and change color.
- Once the rinse cools down and is brown, you can remove the cloves and transfer it to a bottle to use. The rinse can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
You can apply the clove rinse to clean hair, focusing on the scalp. If you use a leave-in conditioner, apply it after. Otherwise, style your hair as usual.
